Esophageal Peristaltic Dysfunction in Sevore Esophagitis

Abstract
Defective esophageal peristalsis has been recognized as a feature of reflux esophagitis for many years, even if the esophageal manometry is of little value in the diagnosis of reflux disease.
The aims of the study was analyzing the peristaltic function of the patients with sever esophagitis endoscopically (acid reflux esophagitis. Corrosive esophagitis, alkaline reflux esophagitis), and observing the change of peristaltic function
after the
improvement of esophagitis.
Peristaltic dysfuction was defined as the occurrence of either failed primary peristalsis or small amplitude of peristalic wave in the distal esophagus on the test swallows.
We observed the peristaltic dysfunction was directly related to the severity of esophagitis and the reversibility of peristaltic dysfunction as the disappearance of inflammation.
The types of failed primary peristalsis included no generation of peristalsis, simultaneous contractions and retrograde peristalsis.
The exam results of 2 cases that did not improve did not change during the period of 1 year 6 months of following check-up.
We concluded the severe mucosal inflammation was important determinant developing the esophageal peristaltic dysfunction.
